When Process Mining Helps — And When It Doesn't

Process Mining can generate powerful insights.

But it is not the right solution for every process challenge.

That is important to understand.

Process Mining delivers the strongest value when:

processes generate reliable event logs
transaction volumes are significant
process complexity is high
execution happens largely in digital systems
In these situations, Process Mining can quickly reveal:

bottlenecks
inefficiencies
unexpected variants
compliance issues
The value can be substantial.

But Process Mining is not always the right starting point.

It may be less relevant when:

data quality is poor
processes are mostly manual
volumes are limited
the core challenge is organizational rather than operational
In these cases, other approaches may create more value.

Good process improvement starts with asking the right question.

Not: Should we use Process Mining? But rather: What is the best way to understand this process?

Process Mining can be powerful. But like any method, its value depends on context.
